Biography

Professor Helquist received his B.A. degree in chemistry in 1969 from the University of Minnesota in 1966. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1972 in organic chemistry from Cornell University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University from 1973 to 1974. He joined the faculty at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1974, becoming professor in 1984. He moved to the University of Notre Dame in 1984, where he served as department chair from 1988 to 1993. Professor Helquist was the recipient of the American Chemical Society Exceptional Achievement Award, the University of Notre Dame Shilts-Leonard and Kaneb Teaching Awards, and the Walther Cancer Institute Collaborator of the Year Award.

Research Interests

Professor Helquist's research group is interested in the development of new transition metal reagents and catalysts for selective synthetic reactions, new methods in asymmetric synthesis, and the design, synthesis, and development of new drug candidates, including antibacterial and antitumor agents.
